VayuAI: Modernizing Wind Farm Site Planning

VayuAI recently worked with a wind farm developer to provide insight into a repowering project in Southern California. The developer was interested in repowering and upgrading the existing eight wind turbines, but also potentially adding more turbines to the land. They provided detailed site plans and wind data to VayuAI, and the team did a thorough optimization analysis.

The conclusion? In addition to the upgraded eight turbines at the original locations, the development site can accommodate an additional eight turbines of the upgraded model, provided VayuAI’s wake steering solution is used. The developer can double the capacity of the wind farm on the same site. These insights open the door to repowering on a scale never previously considered.

VayuAI has developed groundbreaking technology which leverages advanced modern methods in modeling and data science to deliver unparalleled insights into the wind farm site planning process. With the large amount of capital required for projects of this scale, why not invest in the best intelligence available to do it right?

Building a wind farm requires numerous nuanced decisions which are underserved by current methodologies. Questions of where the farm will be built (site selection) with how many turbines, where and how they can be situated on the terrain, and turbine model selection are a few of the relevant considerations with meaningful impact on the bottom-line of a project.

CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations are also important for advanced site planning, a critical part of VayuAI’s complete optimization solution. But while CFD is important (general CFD availability is a fairly recent phenomenon) minimal use of CFD simulation is not enough. While very accurate, CFD simulations are computationally expensive and impractical for general use in assessing the large number of variables that must be considered (siting a wind farm will require many simulations for precise insight into the thousands of siting options data that will emerge from the questions outlined above).

Vayu uses high performance computing (HPC) for CFD to check the decision matrix at selected milestones. This is a better approach as long as developers have access to a highly proficient assessment and HPC such as Vayu’s.

VayuAI has developed cutting-edge models assessing wake of turbines which provide meaningful accuracy at significant speed. This enables the optimization across the many variables mentioned above. With VayuAI, CFDs serve as the final “layer” of the system to verify results in the final selection processes.

VayuAI’s development of detailed, accurate and highly scalable wake models, revolutionizes the way that wind farms are planned. Wind farm stakeholders are reaping the benefits.

When combined with VayuAI’s advanced proprietary wake steering control strategies, new options for increased capacity and power can be identified. In fact, VayuAI has the capability to design a wind farm specifically for a wake steering system, compounding gains for stakeholders.

With a carefully implemented site plan that accommodates the use of advanced wake steering models, developers can place more turbines on the same property, and preserve the efficiency (capacity factor) of the wind farm. This paradigm shift has huge implications for wind farm projects and investments across the world. We are very excited about the implications of our innovations.
